He was provided with six tons of supplies, including 29,000 yards of cloth, 350 lbs. of copper wire as well as many non-essentials.  Among these included a case of champagne.  His instructions were to keep the expedition secret.  Using the old trail of BURTON and SPEKE, he journeyed for six weeks before arriving at Ujiji.  This led him to Lake Tanganyika where Livingstone was indeed living.  Here Stanley broke open the champagne and the two became quick friends.
